Leadership in the New Millenium: The Basics of Leadership

This foundational course is two-day workshop designed for teams of Clergy and Lay Leaders. It starts on Thursday evening with a reflection on the Biblical Mission of the Church. Then, we look at the critical role of Mission, Mission and Values in today’s church. Participants are given several instruments as homework to help build self-awareness of their leadership and conflict management styles.
Friday morning starts with a spiritual meditation on the Role of Spiritual Gifts in building a healthy church community. The rest of the morning is spent assessing the results of the instruments, and building an understanding of how personality and conflict resolution styles affect the dynamics of a leadership team. The focus is on building a Body of Christ that values the differences we bring to the team as individuals.
The differences between leadership and management are explored, along with the roles Clergy and Lay leadership play in a healthy church. We examine the importance of breaking dysfunctional patterns in the move to transformation. Church teams are invited to process this learning at their tables, and to identify the reality facing their team in bringing change to their church.
In the afternoon, we examine the process of building a shared vision of the future in the church. A personal visioning exercise helps participants see how their personal vision is a key building block to a shared vision. We share practical steps to build positive tension around a vision of renewal. Tools for discerning God’s call to mission are shared in spiritual meditations. The day ends with a review of the Natural Church Development process of building a healthy church, and a spiritual exercise accompanied by petitions of prayer for healthy change.
Saturday morning starts with Spiritual meditation. We follow meditation with a Power Surge Forum, focusing on building discipleship communities. We examine transformational ministry breaking out across the church, and encourage networking with fellow sojourners on the transformational road. We finish the workshop by having church teams develop implementation plans for the next six months. Action plans are reported out to the whole group so ideas can be shared and taken back and incorporated into future plans.
While this workshop is designed for 16 hours of contact time, it can be modified to meet your needs. We work with individual churches to format a Friday Evening, all day Saturday workshop to facilitate participation of lay people. Hear what Dick Hoglund, a lay leader with Christ Lutheran in Fairfield Glade, Tn., who attended this course has to say:
We have been blessed by attending your leadership-training workshop. It was well done in all respects and we took much home with us. Our Christ Church delegation spent almost the entire 3.5 hours of our trip back to Fairfield Glade talking about the sessions and insights we had gained. We also filled a tablet page with ideas, suggestions, goals, and "resolutions" regarding things we wish to try at church. I give it a grade of A+.
Our pastors have been trained to shepherd churches where they are. It takes a different set of skills to lead a church to renewal and refocus on mission. The Academy will help you develop these skills.
