Power Surge

Mike makes an elegant case for moving beyond the focus on membership in today's church. He calls us to the ancient/modern discipleship community. While the average age of Lutherans in the United States is late 50's, Mike and his team have grown a church community of 10,000+ with an average age of 30. This book is very helpful in framing the need for transformation for the leaders of your church.
Action hint: Buy enough copies for your Church Council. Then, set aside 20-30 minutes at the beginning of each meeting to facilitate a dialog about a couple of chapters in each month. Transformation is very much about changing the culture of a church. Culture is build upon shared ideas. For discipleship to become a shared idea in your community requires dialog. Mike's ideas create an excellent opportunity to shape the ideas at the table.

Mike has been a pioneer in leading the church back to the first century model of disciple-making. He is an excellent speaker and leader.
His book makes a strong case that the membership model of church no longer works, and that we must transform ourselves into discipleship communities. His work is a great primer for lay leaders on the emerging church. He has developed a coaching network across the ELCA to support the move to discipleship.
