The Marks of Discipleship as Integrated into a Church System
Mike Foss and Dave Stark at Changing Church Forum are working to replicate discipleship communities across the country. The Vital Pastoral Leadership Network is developing and training coaches who are working with pastors across the country to embed the Marks of Discipleship in their community. The marks, as outlined in Mike's book Power Surge, are spiritual practices that will unleash a Power Surge of the Holy Spirit in the church. These marks are:
Pray Daily
Worship Weekly
Read the Bible Daily
Serve within and beyond the congregation
Build Relationships that allow you to share Christ
Give a Tithe
At a recent coaches training event, they offered an analysis of the systems that support integrating the Marks of Discipleship into a church.
1. A Welcoming System. Every church needs a welcoming system that is especially aware of those who are not a part of the family already.
2. A Celebration System. Every church needs worship/celebration systems that are appropriate for different audiences, generations and styles.
3. The Nurturing System. Every church should have a process of nurturing new people into involvement in the church.
4. The Learning System. Every church has to have a learning system where people can learn to pray, read the Bible, as well as other areas of learning for living lives as disciples.
5. The Transforming System. People will much more likely transform part of their life if they relate to others in some type of small group together.
6. An Equipping System. Churches must have an equipping system that empowers, trains, and supports lay people in doing service in the church and in the world.
