Transformational Leadership: Connecting With the Emerging Church
The 7th Annual Transformational Leaders Gathering January 24-27, 2005 at the Holiday Inn International Drive, Orlando, Florida
All around us, the Spirit is moving and the Church is changing. In congregations, in the ELCA, and outside, something new is being born around us. Missionary and relational as the First Century Church, digital and networked as the 21st Century world, this Emerging Church is being birthed and growing all around us. Come join the many pastors of the TLG and discover connections that can start you down the road to personal transformation, the congregation you serve toward community transformation, and new mentor/companions for the journey with the Spirit.
Location
The Holiday Inn at International Drive has hosted the TLG for several years and is located right in the heart of Orlando’s famous tourist corridor. Shopping, restaurants of all kinds, and fun activities are within easy walking distance. Transportation is available to and from both Orlando airports. A complimentary scheduled shuttle service is provided to Universal Orlando, SeaWorld, and Wet 'N Wild Water Park.
What to Expect
TLG Pre-Gathering – January 24-25
Introduction to the Transformational Environment
(for first time TLG attenders and anyone interested)The pre-gathering will be an opportunity to:
• attend presentations which will not be part of the main gathering (pre-gathering is heavier on presentation than discussion, so that the main gathering can be just the opposite)
• help identify what "transformation” is, what are the first steps in a transformational journey, and test your own thought processes regarding it
• increase one’s perception of the role of both mission and vision in shaping the future church
• clarify the changing role of leadership in the ancient/modern church
• sharpen the contrasts between the Discipleship Community and the Membership model of church
• along with the main gathering, connect with fellow travelers, as well as learn where to look for support (since not much is coming from the ELCA or Synod leaders)
• generate a comfort level for new participants to "jump-in" when the main gathering begins

Roger Ganzel - Roger Ganzel has been part of TLG since its inception. He spent thirty-eight years helping to develop five new mission congregations in WI, OH and FL. Since then he has also been transitional and interim pastor with two more missions in GA and FL. For eight years he was the synodical representative for evangelism for the Florida-Bahamas Synod. Currently he serves as an interim pastor and actively coaches the transformation of congregations from maintenance to mission. In February, 2002, he was chosen as a pastor-in-residence at Trinity Seminary to lead transformation workshops for students and faculty.Gregg Burch, - Gregg spent 25 years learning leadership lessons as he and his brother grew their family business to 325 people. They were chosen as the Family Business of the Year for the state of Georgia in 1996. He completed an Executive MBA at Georgia State at the top of his class in 1998, and was certified as an Organizational Structural Consultant in 2002. In addition to his years of business leadership, Burch spent twenty years in various leadership positions at Apostles Lutheran Church in Atlanta. He left his family business to offer leadership and organization development consulting to church organizations. In 1996 he guided Apostles through to a new strategic vision, which led to a $1.875 Million building program. As Council President in 2000, he launched a transformation of Apostles to focus on discipleship and mission and reverse a long-term decline in membership. Gregg now is the lead coordinator of www.transformingchurch.com and president of Eagle Learning (www.eagle-learning.com) a consulting practice focused on leadership development and organization development.
Tom Lyberg - Tom Lyberg has been a pastor of rural/small town congregations for 14 years, leading them through the changes and growth for 21st century ministry. A part of of TLG for four years, his interest in empowering creative ministry in traditional settings has resulted in serving on the Ohio Candidacy Committee for 8 years, work with congregations on developing permission-giving organizations within an ELCA constitutional framework, and most recently, an article for Lutheran Partners magazine on transformational ministry (http://www.elca.org/lp/0409_04.html) .
TLG Main Gathering – January 25-27
Connecting To the Emerging Church
Start Time - January 25 6PM
Closing - January 27 8:30PM
Don’t think this is for an “advanced” group! The main gathering covers the whole breadth of the trends in the emerging church, transformational tools, as well as time off to enjoy the sun and recharge. Following the TLG pattern of pastor to pastor mentoring and small group interaction, the main gathering will allow opportunities to explore transformation in settings ranging small town to urban, from solo pastorates to senior pastor and staff issues, from dealing with conflict in transformation to renewing personality creativity. In discussion, in worship, and in play, the TLG Main Gathering will bring you into a network committed to being a part and a cutting edge in the emerging church in the ELCA and in the world. We have even set up the schedule so that following the closing on the 27th, we can enjoy a relaxing evening together or if you have an early morning flight out, an early bedtime.
About The Presenters
The presenters and group discussion leaders are all pastors and lay leaders who have been been past participants in TLG and have offered their unique gifts for this gathering. All are real people in real congregations like yours that you can relate to - missions and mid-size, suburb and rural, even large congregations and multi-site. None of us are professional presenters or consultants. We are simply leaders with a passion for transformational ministry, first hand experience of its joys and struggles, and a desire to share how the Spirit has worked in their life and communities with others. As TLG has grown, the pool of people willing and able to help lead has grown and that is part of we believe makes us unique.Johan Berg, Pastor of People of Faith Lutheran Church, Winter Garden, Florida

Meals
Most meals are not included. With such a variety of restaurants so close the hotel, we often divide up into many groups to explore International Drive and continue our discussions over good food.
Free Time
We try and build in plenty of free time into the Gathering. Many of our discussions take place outdoors (even in the hot tub) to enjoy the warm Florida sunshine, since many of us come from the cold, cold north. We also block out extra time for meals to explore locally and one afternoon and evening to enjoy all that the area has to offer. Golf, theme parks, heading to the beach, just finding a chair in the sun for nap – the time is yours to use. Between the hotel and our local hospitality team, we can help you find some refreshing R & R.
Who Should Attend?
Any leader in a congregation who is committed to creatively communicate the Gospel and engage in mission relevant to the 21st Century that is how TLG began, as a gathering of visionary pastors but we have become much more. TLG certainly includes pastors and other rostered leaders in the ELCA but we extend an open invitation to seminarians and professors, congregational leaders and denominational officials anyone who is leading in congregations and desire spiritual growth rather than the plateaued rut most North American congregations find themselves in. TLG would be a perfect opportunity for a lead ministry team and key leaders to attend for renewed vision and empowerment in their shared ministry. If the vision we are painting excites you and if you are drawn to a network of resources and mentors that can grow creative opportunities for mission that the Holy Spirit is offering you in your congregation, then the Transformational Leaders Gathering is for you.
What To Bring
Bring a copy of The Emerging Church by Dan Kimball, read and all marked up with your notes and questions. What else? A bible, something to take notes on (PDA, notebook, or, if you are feeling retro - pen and note pad). Don't forget suitable summertime clothing - the Holiday Inn has a lovely outdoor pool and hot tub that we often conference in. Finally, we invite everyone to bring transformational ministry tools to share. Placed our our resource table, in past years you have been able to find discipling tools, constitutional restructuring helps, reading lists, Values/Mission/Vision statements, and much, much more. If you have something you have used and would like to share, bring copies to share. If we run out, there is always Kinko's or emailing each other after the event.

I would love to be able to find a Pastor to serve as a mentor/coach - I see that mentoring is one of the topics - how might pastors who desire to find a mentor/coach find those willing to serve in that role?

is there a cost if we want to bring spouses - just to enjoy the beautiful warm weather and see the sites, not to attend the conference?
Posted by: Candy at November 29, 2004 04:13 PM
Here are answers to your questions - sorry for the late reply.
Mentoring withing TLG are made at the TLG gathering. If you can't make it, let me know and I'll try and connect you with someone in your neighborhood.
Cost for spouses: Contact our registrar, Mary Duerksen for the room and meal only rates. We have had spouses and families come down and do some of the sites around Orlando while the rest of us enjoy our leadership fun time. :)

What is the cost if you live in the orlando area and want to attend the sessions but sleep at home?
Posted by: Brent Huckaby at December 16, 2004 04:09 PM
We want everyone together as much as possible since relationship building outside sessions is just as important, in our view. However, if you are living right there, it will save you considerable funds. So while we do have some Orlando people who stay onsite, some don't. contact Mary Duerksen for more details.
